The Big Sleep is a three piece band from NYC you might know from the video for “Murder” on the front page of this very site. I never really gave them a fair shot but after the preview of the set I “borrowed” a CD from a colleague’s desk. Fifteen seconds into their track “Bad Blood,” I thought they were going to live up to their name. The initial droney chord progressions were pretty much the aural equivalent of mono. But right when I was about to delete the file—about 30 seconds in—it hit me. A beat dropped in like a tornado in Kansas and my foot started tapping like I’m having a nic-fit. Sonya Balchandani forcefully raided my eardrums. Her voice floats in like a hazy morning fog while Danny Barria and Gabe Rhodes provide the backdrop of guitar and drums.
