I just had some friends in town from London. It was their first trip to New York and more than a few times they commented on the lack of nu-rave, day-glo pacifier-wearing exhibitionists wandering around the streets. I had to explain that The Klaxons aren’t as ubiquitous in the States, and, even if they were, no one here would buy into a media-induced rehash of something they didn’t really care about in the first place (excluding Detroit, of course). Americans may have horrible fashion sense but at least most of us, barring the severely obese, don’t have “Sunday-best” pastel tracksuits.
Anyway, if you take anything away from that rant/ramble of a last paragraph it should be the modifier “media-induced.” The Klaxons don’t give a shit about glowsticks or neon motifs—it was just a shtick they co-opted to sell more records after the Limey music press created the genre while hung-over on deadline. The Klaxons are really just a tight dance-punk band that likes the audience to have a good time at their shows. And that’s about it. Nothing mind-blowing here, but if you want to find out what all the hubbub is about catch them Thursday night (3/20) at the virtual Annex.
