The Mercury Lounge (or, as industry douchebags call it, 'the Merc') is the Lower East Side's proving ground. Every band that you like from New York played some of their earliest shows here, and all the young bands that come through New York make it their mission to perform at the Mercury. This means that if you want to know what everyone will be pretending to have loved for two years one year from now, you need to pay attention to who is on at the Mercury Lounge.
And yes, the back room is a cavern that makes claustrophobics start to hyperventilate. But that's part of the fun. What good is spotting the next Strokes if you aren't packed in with an adoring crowd who all know they are witnessing history?
